Band Feature: Maladaptive Daydream

Maladaptive Daydream - Jaaciel Vides Soberanis, Naia Wickoren, Maisy Barden, B Cornelius, & River Lopez
Meet Maladaptive Daydream, one of our "Focus" level bands here at Music House. All of these students have improved and grown exponentially since joining the band program. Here's what they had to say about their experience when we recently interviewed them...
Why did you name your band "Maladaptive Daydream"? What's the story behind it?
Maisy Barden: I was talking about cartoons and how people can daydream about fictional characters, and it begins to affect their actual real life, which is called maladaptive daydreaming. Someone mentioned that that would make a good band name and we just went for it! |
What is the best part of being in a band?
B Cornelius: The best part of being in a band at Music House is that it's like you get to experience what it would be like in a real band, but you don't have to worry about some of the hard parts like finding your own gigs and finding a practice space. River Lopez: The best part of being in a band is making music and connecting to the people in your band. Naia Wickoren: With private lessons, it's just you and a teacher going over something, but with a band, you're making friends and playing your favorite songs. Getting together with other musicians and getting to hear all the instruments together is so awesome! Maisy: I get to have friends outside of school and get to make music! Jaaciel Vides Soberanis: It just feels good be here! It feels good to compose our own songs and to play with our friends. |
What are some of your band goals?
Maisy: We can write our own original music and build up to a whole set of original tunes! B: We can find what we want to sound like. And then we can show that to other people and inspire them to join a band and continue to get into music, even if they feel like quitting. River: To get our picture in the Hall of Fame and win the Music House trophy! And also just to be known for making good music. Naia: I want to be able to solo and shred! Jaaciel: I just want to learn and get better as a musician! |
What is your most memorable band experience?
B: One time during one of our concerts, a baby cried in the audience, and Naia said, "I feel that Baby," and I was laughing so hard! It really eased the pain of having to get on stage! Maisy: I remember my first band practice when I met B and Naia. I was really nervous and wasn't sure if I was going to stay, but I made friends with everyone and ended up staying in he program to this day! |
If you got to open for any band or artist, current or defunct, who would it be?
River: Underoath. B: The Killers. Maisy: Lovejoy. Naia: Arkansauce. Jaaciel: Kraftwerk. |
What advice would you give to students that are just getting started?
Maisy: It might be awkward at first, but you'll make so many friends and learn so much. Never quit! B: Be friendly so others feel welcomed! River: If you like your instrument, just keep going and never give up on your passion! Naia: I was terrified about joining the band! But it's gonna be ok. Your band members will support you and you'll make a lot of friends and learn a lot along the way. Jaaciel: Don't be afraid to look or try silly stuff. |
What do you guys do that's special – that you think sets you apart from all the Music House bands?
Naia: We all have such different music tastes that I think makes us really unique and brings a lot for us to use for our original songs! |
How has playing with other people benefited you?
Naia: It's made me more confident as a player overall. And it made playing the guitar way more fun! River: It boosted my confidence a lot, once I heard everyone playing together. B: Before I was in a band, I was feeling like quitting... But once I joined, I realized how much fun playing with other people was and I wanted to keep going on my instruments! Maisy: I didn't know how to do some vocal techniques, and the bands pushed me to learn them. It also helped expand my musical taste. Jaaciel: The band pushed me to learn some new ideas and techniques. I'm excited to work on more! |
