Senior Send-off: Mary Burgett

 by Aaron Sizemore

Bass & band student Mary Burgett

For years now, we've watched Mary Burgett grow into a formidable musician and super cool young woman. She's off to K-State to study pre-veterinarian medicine this fall. The initiative she's shown at Music House makes us suspect that Mary has great things ahead of her.

Here's what Mary had to say when we interviewed her recently.

What instrument do you play?

Bass, Guitar, trumpet. I also have some experience with the drumset.

How long have you been a student at Music House?

At least 8 years, but it's been so long that I don't know the exact time.

What are your plans for after graduating high school? If you're going to college, do you know what you'll be studying?

I'm going to K-State, to study pre-veterinary medicine. Hopefully, a year after that, I'll be going to K-State Veterinary school and get my DVM.

How do you think music will be a part of your life after Music House?

I will always love music. I do worry that I won't have time to play as much as I do now with how busy I'll be, but my instruments will always be there when I need to feel better.

What is a moment at Music House that you'll never forget?

Our [Decisive Drama's] first show at RecordBar in Decemeber of 2022. It was such a fun show and my first experience playing out in a real venue.

What advice do you have for Music House students who are just starting?

Don't limit yourself to 1 genre. You don't have to like a genre to enjoy playing it. I thank Ray Toro (My Chemical Romance) for helping inspire me to get into playing classical pieces on the acoustic guitar.

What's the best piece of musical advice you've received?

You don't have to study music theory to write cool songs or be a good musician. Sometimes you can just make up a chord and, if it sounds good to you, you can take it places.

What do you hope to remember most about your best performance at Music House?

I remember when I played my rendition of "Clair De Lune" (Debussy). This older lady flagged me down in the MH parking lot and told me how much she loved and adored my performance. It has stuck with me to this day.

What will you miss most about Music House?

The people! Everyone here has always been so nice and they're all fun to chat and hang out with.
